Some National Minimum Wage rates change from 1 October 2012, and the new rates must be applied from this date:

  • The adult rate will rise by 11p to £6.19 per hour
  • The rate for 18-20 year olds will remain at £4.98 per hour
  • The rate for 16-17 year olds will remain at £3.68 per hour
  • The apprentices’ rate will rise by 5p to £2.65 per hour.
HM Revenue and Customs has made it clear it will actively pursue businesses flouting National Minimum Wage law. In a recent case, the owners of a small business were ordered to pay over £11,000 to two former employees after they failed to pay the minimum wage.
