Despite reports that Fujitsu are planning to make 1,800 employees in the UK redundant, workers in the mechanical engineering sector have actually received the highest average pay for the second year running, according to data from Croner Reward’s recently published North West Rewards report.
From 2011-2014, research from pay specialists Croner Reward found that IT or technical services roles tended to fetch the highest salaries. However, this year’s research has found that mechanical engineers once again emerged victorious with an average annual salary of £54,521.
Clare Parkinson, Croner Reward Business Manager, comments: "There has been a widely recognised shortage of skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the UK, which would justify the high earnings. With Theresa May also emphasising her focus on the ratio between pay for the average worker compared to the CEO, it will be interesting to see if the trend of clerical and operatives receiving higher pay increases continues."
Other findings of the report include:
- Average clerical salary in the North West is £19,639, up 2.4% in the last 12 months
- Average UK operative weekly pay is £412.31, up 3.4% in the last 12 months
- Management pay has increased by an average of 1.2% over the last 12 months
- The highest median basic salary was received by managers in organisations with £50M - £100M turnover and over 4,000 employees
- The county with the highest earnings in the North West is Merseyside with an average annual salary of £39,584
