AI Product Manager
About the role
We are building AI products used by our clients and across the wider group. The AI team currently covers strategy and technical leadership, engineering, and delivery and quality. What it does not yet have is a dedicated product voice — someone who decides what gets built and in what order, and makes sure it is grounded in real user need, real professional expertise and real regulatory obligation.
That is this role. You will take the Director’s high-level roadmap and turn it into a prioritised, well-specified backlog the engineering team can build from. You will run discovery with users, advisers and clients, and you will own the legal and privacy requirements that shape what we build.
You will also lead two specialists. The AI Domain & Workflow Specialist brings deep professional knowledge into product decisions, working closely enough with you that domain expertise shapes requirements rather than arriving after the fact. The Product Analyst measures how the product actually performs — by client, by sector, by subject matter, by the kind of question being asked — and you will use that evidence to sharpen priorities and inform the roadmap.
You will own the definition of the product: what we build, in what order, and why. The engineering team builds from your backlog, and you will sit in the AI leadership team alongside the Director and the Delivery & QA Manager, with decision rights that are written down and respected. It is a role with real authority over the product and real proximity to the clients who use it.
What you will do
Product definition and backlog
• Refine the AI roadmap into a prioritised product backlog.
• Own backlog content, ordering and refinement.
• Prioritise on the basis of value, risk, effort and dependencies.
• Make the reasoning behind your prioritisation visible to the team and to stakeholders — so that people understand the trade-offs, not just the outcome.
• Work with the Director to align the AI roadmap with the wider product roadmap, so that AI work lands coherently alongside other product commitments.
• Use the Product Analyst’s performance and adoption findings to refine priorities, and feed them into the roadmap the Director owns.
Discovery and requirements
• Own product discovery with users, advisers and clients.
• Define requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria that engineers can build from without guessing.
• Define what success looks like for each feature, applying the evaluation standards the Director sets.
• Validate delivered features against user needs and agreed criteria, and accept or decline the work.
Legal and privacy requirements
Our clients buy professional advice on compliance, so how we handle obligations in our own products matters commercially as well as legally. This part of the role is about building those obligations in from the outset rather than retro-fitting them after a feature is built.
• Work out what data protection obligations under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 mean in practice for the product — lawful basis, data minimisation, retention, and where a DPIA is needed — and write them into requirements.
• Track obligations emerging from the EU AI Act and wider AI governance expectations, including transparency, human oversight and record-keeping.
• Work with Legal, Data Protection and Information Security colleagues, within the risk appetite the Director sets.
• Contribute to the team’s AI governance standards and to how they are applied in practice.
• Know the limits of your own judgement, and involve specialist counsel rather than guessing.
Product ownership and client engagement
• Act as internal Product Owner for the AI team: clarify scope, answer questions, and accept completed work.
• Be the first point of contact for client questions on features, compliance and privacy.
• Join key client conversations where product depth is needed, and feed what you learn back into discovery.
• Maintain reusable product, privacy and AI governance material, so that the answers clients get are consistent.
• Contribute the product and compliance view to the go / no-go recommendation for a release. The recommendation is led by the Delivery & QA Manager; the decision is the Director’s.
People leadership
• Line-manage the AI Domain & Workflow Specialist and the Product Analyst.
• Direct how in-house professional expertise is applied to product decisions.
• Set the priorities of both roles, so that domain insight and performance evidence arrive in time to shape decisions rather than after they are made.
• Hold regular one-to-ones and performance reviews, and support career development and wellbeing.
• Contribute to recruitment for the team as it continues to grow.
Level and experience
The role is offered at mid to senior level, and we will appoint on the strength of the person rather than to a fixed grade. The responsibilities above apply either way — including ownership of the legal and privacy requirements.
What will reflect experience is the degree of autonomy: how much support you draw on when an obligation is new or unsettled, whether client conversations carry a review step in the early months, how much of the portfolio you take on at once, and how far you shape the roadmap the Director owns. Position within the salary band reflects the level appointed.
If you are not certain which end of that range you sit at, apply anyway.
What we are looking for
Essential
• A track record as a product manager or product owner in a software environment, having owned a backlog end to end.
• Demonstrable ability to write requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria that a development team can build from.
• Experience running discovery with real users or customers, and turning what you learn into product decisions.
• A working knowledge of UK data protection law as it applies to product decisions, and the confidence to own privacy requirements rather than delegate them.
• Comfort working on AI or machine-learning products — or clear evidence that you learn new technical domains quickly and well.
• The ability to hold a position on scope and priority with senior colleagues, and to explain your reasoning rather than assert it.
• Comfort operating in a model where you do not own delivery scheduling or technical direction.
Desirable
• Experience in one of our professional domains — tax, HR, health and safety, or care — or in another regulated professional services environment.
• Familiarity with EU AI Act obligations and how they translate into product requirements.
• An understanding of how AI systems are evaluated, and why evaluation matters to release decisions.
• Experience line-managing or mentoring — particularly of specialists, such as domain experts or analysts, rather than other product people.
• Experience as Product Owner within an agile delivery team.
Why this role
• You will shape a product function that does not exist yet, rather than inherit someone else’s.
• The operating model is already written down and agreed, so your remit and decision rights are clear from day one.
• You will work directly with in-house professional experts, on products where domain depth is the differentiator rather than the technology alone.
• The team is growing from six to twelve, so the products you define will be built by a team with real capacity behind it.
