The launch of the BS 30480:2025 Suicide and the workplace - Intervention, prevention and support for people affected by suicide - Guide, indicates a significant and positive step forward. The BS 30480 standard is the UK's first dedicated workplace standard on suicide, offering organisations a framework to tackle planning, respond to and support their workforce, in the event suicide impacts their workplace.
According to Government statistics, seven thousand and fifty-five people died by suicide across the UK working out to an average of nineteen lives lost a day. Each death to suicide, according to the figures impacts 135 people, either directly or indirectly, this can include friends, family, colleagues, clients and more.
Whilst statistics can seem somewhat detached from the reality of the situation, the truth is that these numbers represent a very real human cost, yet many employers are unprepared, uninformed and lack the support and resources to effectively combat and/or respond to a suicide. The BS 30480 standard seeks to remedy this.
