To ensure that compliance is followed and that the risk to both your business and the safety of you employees is limited, you should ensure that you perform a risk assessment to identify any hazardous substances in the working environment. Be advised that some hazardous substances such as asbestos and lead have their own unique set of regulations and require their own processes when present in the workplace.

Under COSHH regulations, employers should:

  • Regularly observe tasks that involve hazardous substances.
  • Provide the correct health surveillance checks.
  • Supply, maintain and where appropriate replace necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Check that employees are always following safe and correct procedure.
  • Prevent and control employee exposure to hazardous substances.
  • Ensure staff are adequately trained and understand COSHH.
  • Provide an accident plan in the event of an accident.
  • Provide COSHH risk assessments.

Identify the hazard:

  • Recognise substances that could cause harm. This includes substances such as dust, fumes and chemicals.

Identify who is at risk:

  • This will help evaluate the risk of harm, who is likely to be at risk and the likelihood of it happening.

Apply control measures:

  • If the Hazard cannot be completely eradicated, then control measures need to be applied. This can include PPE and specialist equipment.

Record your findings:

  • Record the hazards you find, and what measures you put in place to limit exposure.

Monitor measures continually:

  • Ensure you monitor the results of your evaluation and your COSHH assessment to highlight areas of improvement and new risks.
