Why Should Women Get Paid Less Than Men For Doing Exactly The Same Role?

Businesses should take action now, after 80% admit paying men more than women. The latest figures show that out of the 1,000 businesses that have reported their gender pay gap so far, the vast majority have confirmed they are not providing equal pay for men and women.

Almost 8,000 businesses are yet to publish their gender pay gap, with the April deadline fast approaching, companies with 250 employees or more need to take action now. We have a situation where 20% of UK companies are awarding men on average a higher salary than women. This is a point of concern in the context of equal pay. This presents us with an opportunity for organisations to consider how they set pay and benefits and put themselves in a good place by creating an overall reward pay policy. But it does raise an important issue that needs to be addressed with immediate effect.

The April deadline is looming and it’s clear that organisations do not see this as a priority. If any of us was one of the women that is getting paid less for doing exactly the same job as a man, I am confident that this would be treated with the upmost priority and urgency. From March there are only 31 days to go for organisations to take action, and to do what they need to do, and treat men and women equally in the context of what we expect of them. Why should a woman get paid less than a man for doing exactly the same role?
